Darice Michelle Class – Part B

Since Amanda is a sassy, cool, rockin’ chic of a singer, I felt it appropriate to capture her style both in personality and the style of her music. ¬†It is imperative that the photographer should assess the “client” and what message they want to send to their fans/viewers so that both the photographer and client have a common understanding before the actual shoot. ¬†I was very excited when Amanda came to me wanting me to photograph her photos for her CD’s, website, and other marketing materials. ¬†Most of my work is focused on weddings which I enjoy, but it’s also nice when I am given the chance to be creative and funky with my camera. ¬†I had so much fun with Amanda’s shoot not only because she gave me total freedom to photograph her how I wanted to, but I loved her fun, sweet and genuine personality too! ¬†

As you noticed in Part A (post right below this one), Amanda wore an adorable dress communicating she is sweet, cute, adorable, beautiful and sexy; but in Part B of our session, she is also sassy, hip, cool, hot and feisty.  The grungy look for a singer is quite fitting for her style, so our next portion of her shoot was to depict this all.

Below you will see the SAME image in three different color tones.  Giving the client options of the same image not only gives them more opportunities to utilize their photo for any particular marketing need they might have but it also shows them what you are capable of producing.

Here is the wall we used for these shots…

Now although the wall next to the dark doors consisted of bright blue and yellow colors, I toned it down in photoshop in order to keep with the feel of her grungy outfit.

You can diminish the saturation of any image by altering the temperature, tint, and saturation options in the Raw Dialog Box with photoshop.  You can see below what my settings were to accomplish this look.

Now although I like the image with this pail look to it, I also wanted to produce something completely opposite like this by increasing contrast and the shadows in levels.

Increasing your shadows, contrast and levels will certainly darken the image as so.  So again, now the client has two totally different photos to choose from according to what her marketing needs are.

Changing the vibrant blue wall to a blue that has more character/emotion to it like the one I’ve created below is quite fitting for a rad singer! ¬†: )¬†

The next three images are similar using different color tones. ¬†I do not use actions when it comes to colors. ¬†Each image I edit in photoshop is on an individual basis. ¬†I play around with the temperatures, hues, shadows, vibrance, saturation and the color sliding scales until I nail down the look I want. ¬†There is no set formula; however, once you get excited about something you’ve made, you can certainly save your settings in the Raw Dialog box under presets. ¬†Keep in mind one negative thing though, the preset savings will only work on the images within that shoot. ¬†Using those settings on a shoot you do at another time won’t produce the same results. ¬†Sadly, you’ll have to start over each time. ¬†

Here’s the inside scoop onto how I mustered up the above look!

Here are some fun photos to enjoy looking at…

Next I added more color and contrast to bring about a different form of “art” in this photo below of Amanda…

Me in action : )

Remember my question a few posts ago?

What lighting was used for these images?

The one who guessed it right was….

drum roll….

Beth Morgan! ¬†You were right girl… here’s my sophisticated, highly expensive lighting equipment (truly it is, I am still paying off such lighting equipment LOL… : ) ¬†It’s fun to improvise and be creative though!

I pulled up my van to use my headlights as soon as I saw this grafiti wall. ¬†I wanted to highlight her face and use the dark background to captivate and steal her audience’s attention… and I must say I think I did a pretty darn good job of it! : )

Classic Black and White…

Photo below TAKEN AS IS… (before)

After

Singers often use color redish/orangish hues… so I had to sprinkle some reds and oranges on this next photo…¬†

Darice Michelle Class – Part A (Using Angles & Positioning)

Thank you everyone for your patience as many of you have waited for my next “photography” blog class.

Before I begin my next “blog class”, I would like to introduce you all to Amanda Amaru, a local young talented singer here in Jacksonville! ¬†I am working on getting some of Amanda’s songs to put up on my blog so you all can hear some of her work! ¬†

¬†This is Part A, Part B will be focus on lighting, style, feel & emotion through using photoshop color composition… so check back for Part B soon. ¬†Please know that although I love to help others out to achieve their goals, ambitions and dreams, these blog classes are limited, for you would learn best doing a shoot with me in person or training one-on-one in photoshop. ¬†But for those of you that have an itch to scratch, ¬†I hope you will find these blog classes of an encouragement as I share some of my knowledge here. ¬†Like all, the more you practice and play around, the more you will learn and grow in your craft! ¬†Never stop believing in whatever your photography or personal goals are in life! ¬†Each and every one of us has limitless potential to bring to reality what we dream and vision up within our hearts and minds. ¬†If there is something I don’t know or understand, my number one rule with myself is, “there is no such thing as I don’t know how to,” only, “I have yet to learn how to.” ¬†So don’t stop believing!!! ¬†: )

This Blog Segment, will focus on “where” I am when I snap the photo. ¬†This should help you to see “how” I obtained certain angles and the look I wanted to achieve from each angle. ¬†

Here I am standing to include part of the palms in the foreground of my photo.   Sometimes adding color to an image helps to enhance the interest of the image.  In addition, including an object in front of your subject gives the image dimension and framing.

The result? ¬†…

In this next photo, I am leaning up against the wall shooting straight towards Amanda using the classic tilt.  Now keep in mind that in order to blur the left side wall here, I placed my lens literally up against the wall as to include the wall in part of my image.  The combination of the side wall and the classic tilt turns an ordinary image to an interesting image.

¬†Most of my images are taken at ground level. ¬†I think too often photographers don’t get low enough to produce below eye level photos. ¬†For all you male photographers out there, I would suggest working on your inner hip flexibility abilities whenever you are at the gym so you too can get lower down : )

Using a fish eye…the result?

Again I am squatting but this time at a more “normal” level…

The result…

To offer the client a selection to choose from, I also pulled out the Lens Baby for the same shot…

To give you an idea of “where ” I placed Amanda, this over view photo will help you to visualize her location for these shots…

Now for those of you that might not be able to squat down, you can always come to a normal seated position which not only is easier on the knees and quads (gosh I sound like I am teaching yoga right now! HA HA), but it can also help to steady your hands thus reducing camera shake creating sharper images.

The following images were taken with me sitting comfortably on the sidewalk like you see me doing in the above photo.

And here we have Kristen Cavallo practicing her own shots…

Kristen did an awesome job producing these photos…

This photo below is my favorite one Kristen shot!

These next two images were taken with me literally lying on the ground tummy faced down! ¬†You have to get THAT low if you want images like these…

If you want the inside scoop on how to produce long and thin legs (although Amanda already has thin legs)  you will do good to shoot over her using a fish eye lens.

In my opinion, another key aspect that photographers should ALWAYS do no matter what kind of shoot they are doing or WHO they are photographing is to periodically SHOW your clients the images you are creating. ¬†By doing so, not only are you building their own confidence in how they are “performing” in front of the camera, but you are earning their trust when they can see firsthand that you are doing a great job with them. ¬†Once they see how fantastic they look in their photos, they will relax more, let go of their inhibitions, and enjoy the whole process which results in more striking, fun, and character-filled images from your clients! ¬†And isn’t that what all photographers dream of, having a client who is animated and actually DOES something for your camera! ¬†: )

Ok, so I warned you the majority of my takes includes me squatting… ¬†it’s good for stretching the hip flexors and calves (LOL).

But for those of you that think I can’t stand.. ha ha, I do revert to the traditional photography pose every now and then…

And here we go again, back down to the ground but not fully squatting : )

These next series of photos is of my other student, Tessa. ¬†I LOVE how she changed her position rather than remaining in the same position! ¬†Take notice of the different levels of height she is at and how she goes from horizontal to vertical in the same position…

Love this next position, this once will certainly strengthen your ab muscles!  LOL

Street photos are always fun to do. ¬†But I don’t recommend doing it unless you’ve got someone watching your back! ¬†I have always been fortunate to have help in this! ¬†When taking street photos, DO INCLUDE cars in the background. ¬†Headlights always make street photos better!

Next Amanda wanted a PINK background so we drove around until we found a building with pink in it. ¬†Now what we found would not be what most photographers would use… yet we took our chances and used it anyway…

Here I used photoshop manipulation to change the pink hues to a more peachy/brown hue. ¬†Colors drastically change the “mood” and “feel” of an image. ¬†Don’t shy away from experimenting!

Vertical image with me standing above Amanda using the 50mm lens pointed to the right…

Same image with the camera now pointing the left; however, I turned the camera literally upside down to flop this the way you see it…

Wondering what our pink background was?

A tiny pink strip of a “wall” that truly was not easy to work with. ¬†As we arrived to take a closer look at this wall I noticed how narrow it was, the ground was not even and the sign above would bring limitations to how much space we’d have. ¬†Yet we didn’t need to get back in my car to find another wall, we worked with what we had… here is our wall….

(photos taken by Kristen and Tessa)

It was a MUST to shoot at a vertical angle in order to utilize the little amount of pink wall we had to work with.  My 50mm lens was my best option.

Now I like how Kristen took this next photo.  Although the pink wall does not fill up the frame, she positioned the wall to show its surrounding area.  The green grass truly adds to the pink color here and I like that she shot standing above Amanda.  Kristen used a wide angel for this shot.

I thought the sign was fun, so we decided to include it, (I did have to photoshop the wall in more to fill up the frame)…

I hope you enjoyed some basic angling techniques.  My Part B class will be more involved for I will get more technical and show you some dramatic ways to bring out photoshop colors in order to fit with what your client wants to achieve in his/her photos.  Part B photos will look very different from Part A, so stay tuned.

Question for the day… who can guess the right answer…

What kind of lighting did I use for these shots?

Any guessers?

Scarlett Lillian’s Birthday!!!

Last night was a blast for some of us fellow photographers got to deck it all out for Scarlett Lillian’s special birthday occasion. ¬†Now Scarlett’s birthday is actually the same day as Christmas, but we celebrated last night and sure had a blast. ¬†

Above: Franca, Rachel and Scarlett. ¬† All these girls went to grade school together and are still in touch! ¬†Pretty cool huh! ¬†Rachel, in the middle, is Scarlett’s right hand woman now! ¬†They both keep quite busy with all of Scarlett’s photography adventures!

The birthday celebration started out at Scarlett’s house to which we were surprised when¬†Scarlett handed out gifts for US! ¬†Since Scarlett’s trade mark is HOT PINK, of course we were showered with pink girly love known as body mist and lipgloss…

Above: Here’s Lyndsay, another dynamic photographer, with Pink Coffee Photo Art, opening up her present! ¬†Lyndsay is a fantastic photographer too, check out her website when you can! ¬† Lyndsay was one of the winners for Spend the Day with Scarlett.¬†

All the ladies spritzed up with their new body mist and of course Scarlett did too!

And the lovely Danielle Downing! ¬†Danielle and Jay are getting married on March 21st, Scarlett photographed their engagement session and will be doing their wedding. ¬†I can’t wait to see their wedding photos! ¬†Danielle is loads of fun and super creative as a Independent Residential and Commercial Designer, check out Danielle’s Blog

Our second surprise for the evening was that Scarlett arranged for us to drive in style to The Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island, the place where we had a VIP dinner!  It was my first time at the Ritz NOT working!  It was really nice to sit back, relax and enjoy the food!

Making our way to the limo…

Our limo ride was filled with laughs as we took turns karoking, telling stories, being silly, drinking campagne and telling women secrets that I gave my life in promises that I would not blog about it all!  Auh, no fair right!?!  LOL.

Here’s Scarlett belting it out!!!

Sassy girls!

Here’s Rachel after she just spilled a bunch of champagne all over her lap!

Kacy is such a natural in front of the camera!   Thanks to Beth Morgan for taking this shot!  The camera was passed around here and there, and Beth needed to get her camera fix LOL!

Franca is Italian too so she and I felt connected right away!  Fun girl!!!!

Arriving at the Ritz we all exited the limo like the celebrities do…¬†

Here’s Beth who is also a great photographer. ¬†She spent the day with Scarlett. ¬†Beth is so sweet, I was so happy I got to meet her! Check out Beth’s spiffy blog!¬†

Woo wee, look at Rachel!  Hot sexy lady!!!

Me being silly!

Last but not the least the STAR of the day… Scarlett Lillian! ¬†Watch out, hot photographer coming your way! ¬†

At some point in the night, we all talked about how it must be a prerequisite that you have to be a diva to become Scarlett’s friend. ¬†Check out all the divas! ¬†: )

We ate at The Salt Restaurant in house and let me tell you, the food was delicious! ¬†We had a 5-course meal! ¬†I didn’t take photos of every dish that came our way because honestly I couldn’t wait to eat it!! ¬†So you’ll just have to imagine mouth watering food before you!

Happy Birthday Scarlett!

Yay, Ginger Dupre, another fabulous photographer, was able to make it to the party!

We had to grab our waiter to be in this next shot and I am sure he was one pretty happy man when the birthday girl gave him a special kiss!

After our wonderful dinner at the Ritz, we returned to Scar’s house for some pink cup cakes and last minute photo opps. ¬†

Scarlett with Kacy

Scarlett playing with the camera as she captures Kacy and I…¬†

¬†Happy Birthday Scarlett! ¬†We all love you girl!!! ¬†Can’t wait to see the video! ¬†: )
