The Holiday Tent

Back in April of 2007 I posted in my OLD BLOG about how after watching the movie, The Holiday Tent, I was inspired to make a tent for my own children. So many of you STILL send me emails asking how I made it, I can’t believe it!   I never knew my copy-cat tent making would be so contagious to other moms. ; )

Here is my old post but this time, as best as I could remember, I talk about HOW I made it! I hope some of you parents out there get a chance to try this out at home, it was VERY special to my kids and every once in a while they still mention how much they loved it when I made this for them!

The Tent I Made For My Kids:

001

The tricky part to getting the tent to work is you have to put together two wooden squares.  I don’t remember the dimensions anymore, but I created a small as you can see below then make a larger one so that the blankets and sheets would spread out leaving plenty of space for the kids to stand and play inside.  Drilling holes into each side of the square I tied rope (as you can see in the photo) in order to connect the smaller top wooden square to the bottom wooden square.  Now what you can see here is that the rope actually continues from the top small square through the top of the actual tent which I brought all four pieces of rope together and secured/tied it to a plant hook that was screwed into the ceiling.  We then draped blankets and sheets over and used one chair to the left to keep our tent longer.  We did safety pin the blankets together so that there weren’t any unwelcomed “doors” : )

003

We even made similar stars that the movie tent had hanging from inside.  We cut out stars from card board paper, painted, glittered and decorated them.  We safety pinned them to the top of the sheets and blankets while suspending them down using ribbons so they would hang.

005

We brought in a small lamp for light and, pillows and blankets to snuggle up with while we camped inside our home-made tent.

Miranda’s friend came over to get in on the phone.  Our tent became quite the hang out spot for two weeks!!

My daughter misses having this fish tank.  I can remember all the hard work it took to maintain this thing!  We use to change the backgrounds to the tank and alternate between different fishes and plants, eventually we ended up with real plants and exotic fish, it was quite impressive and soothing to just watch the fish aimlessly around the tank.

Well there you have it.  For all of those that send me emails STILL about this tent, here it is.  I hope my ideas will build upon your own.  Good luck in your tent making projects!

Not Another Survey!

I found this survey and thought it to be a fun to answer.  Feel free to use this survey and pass along to your friends.  I don’t usually do surveys, but they can be fun to do, so here it goes:

1. What is your favorite place to drive?

I LOVE driving over the Buckman Bridge, no matter how I am feeling during my day, the minute my tires hit the long stretched out bride hovering over the St. Johns River, immediately I begin to smile.  There’s something about being in the open space overlooking the glimmering water with the occasional military planes in the sky that somehow cheers me up.  It’s my favorite place to drive for sure!

2. What was the last thing you read?

I just read the Julington Creekline Paper. I usually don’t read it, but this morning I enjoyed being “informed” on all the things going on in my little community.

3. What are your plans for today?

My kids are having a slumber party at our new home.  My house will be packed with sticky fingers from all the junk food they’ll eat, and sleeping bags all over the place… can’t wait.  We will have movie night and fun activities to do.

4. What did you dream about last night?

Hmmm, I had bizarre dreams last night, lets see if I can remember them though… I remember waking up thinking, “those dreams were weird” but I honestly don’t remember what they were!

5. What did you last teach your child(ren)?

I taught my daughter the importance of respecting and treating her family members rightly.  It was a great long talk.  I taught my son about World War II and who Adolf Hitler was.

6. Last movie seen?

I saw “Not Another Teen Movie”, well didn’t finish it.  Thought it was hilarious and loved how they brought scenes back from movies I loved as a teen.  Also watched “Sex and the City” last night and was moved by the episode.  And saw the movie, shoot, can’t remember the title, “Dupree Something”… seen it before, but it was great watching it again.  I enjoyed watching Twilight with my daughter… for the 6th time! LOL.  She loves that movie.  Wow, I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately huh!

7. What was the last thing you surfed on the internet?

I saw a notice on bridemaids dresses for under $20!  Will post about that for my brides who are trying to save on their wedding costs!

8. Last person that touched you?

Well I wouldn’t actually say it was a person, rather a dog!  My new neighbor has a dog and when he went out of town, we watched his cute dog for him.  His dog is so sweet so it was quite easy to love up on him so much.  Well now the dog prefers me over his owner now!  The dog always comes to my front door or back door and scratches on it wimpering for me to let him in!  When he sees me outside he comes running and jumps up to get in my lap.  Last night he was at my door again crying to get in.  Silly to say that when an animal adores you that much, you can be touched by it!

9. What was your mistake?

HA!  Are you kidding me!  Me, make mistakes… NEVER!

10. Last person that texted you?

My friend, Shon.

11. Where are you going?

Like as in on vacation or with my life! HA HA.

12. Who are your closest friends?

My friends Eileen, Bea, and Kristen.  I have friends that do not judge and are truly loyal and there.  My friendships are the best they’ve ever been over this last year.  I am so blessed to have them.  We laugh together, we make fun of each other, we listen to each other, we cry together, we help each other and we live life together.  I use to see shows about girlfriends that were so tight as friends and always felt it was just a hollywood scene and friends are not that close, but that is not true.  I have amazing friends that truly open up their hearts.

13. What do you enjoy the most?

My kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I can’t say enough great things about them.  My son is so loving and affectionate.  He gives me massages all the time because he wants to “take care” of me.  I have a daughter that is so mature and not afraid to speak her mind and what she sees.  Miranda is learning all about friendships and is so devoted to her friends.  I can’t believe all her friends are experiencing at such a young age already!  It’s all about who is “dating” who and who broke up with who!  CRAZY!  But the great thing is that I know more about what is going on with such things then the parents do!  My daughter talks to me, opens up to me, and lets me in.  I am so grateful that she and I have a close relationship where she can trust me.

14. What is your favorite activity to do?

I’d say working out.  I don’t get to workout like I use to, but when I do get the chance I LOVE IT!  I love challenging my body and the internal pep talks I have when I feel too exhausted to go on with more.  Working out is such a great release and it gives me an outlet to do something good for myself.

15. Last song you heard?

Driving home last night, before I came home, Boom Boom Pow came on.  I love this song.  I always dance in my car to it.  Can’t help it!  I know people must think I am a nut case, but my body just automatically dances when it comes on!

16. What is your recent favorite memory?
I’d say last night watching my friend Sarah get married.  She was so happy and giddy at the alter!  I couldn’t stop smiling!  I’ll never forget her joy.  She was so adorable and so filled with an enormous amount of happiness it just spread all over the place.

17. What is a new goal of yours?

I am working on an exciting new project for my business.  It’s extremely challenging but incredible.  New adventures await me…and new challenges!

18. What is the last thing bought?

A new camera!  Waiting for it to be in stock so they ship it to me finally!  I am so excited. Can’t wait to get my hands on my new Canon 5D Mark II.

19. What is your favorite place in your house?

I’d say my couch.  My kids & I spend a lot of time cuddling up to each other there!

20. What was your last email about?

I created an email account for my daughter so she and I can write to each other.  It gives her a way to talk to me when she is not at home.  I love that we can communicate with each other whether in person or on the internet.  I wrote to her about how much I love her and will always be here for her no matter what.

Super Rad Website!

I once was asked by a website designer, “Darice can you tell me ONE website you’ve ever seen and thought, WOW now that is a website!” To my surprise I couldn’t say that I could think of even ONE website that was that fantastic! Yet….

I found one today that blew my mind! It’s so unique, different and super fun to look at! I thought I would share it all with you and hope that it will be just as pleasing to your eyes as it was to me. The photography is way too cool!

The “lounge” under FAVORITES is my favorite page… Enjoy…….!
